Relieving Stress - It's Evolutionary.

A friend of mine recently got told she was getting laid off. She was facing impending unemployment with bills to pay and a husky puppy to support. Many of us have been in a situation similar to this: facing strenuous circumstances with life changing decisions to make - some of which are out of our hands. It's stressful! Here are a few things we can do to alleviate that pressure in our chest and get out of our heads.

Depending on what kind of person you are, one (or all) of these things could eliminate some of that stress you're experiencing.

Exercise & evolution.

I recently discovered something intriguing from an episode of Netflix's series Explained. Due to the nature of survival and evolution, adrenaline and other stress hormones are released the same way as when we're running late to an appointment versus when we feel our lives are in danger. Our bodies can't distinguish "Everyday Anxiety" from the "Fight or Flight Anxiety." Because of this, exercising (especially outside) is a great way to allow our bodies to use up this energy and adrenaline that is coursing through our veins. You'll also release endorphins which can bring a feeling of elation!

If exercise isn't your thing. . .

Write.

Whether it's journaling or making lists, the physical act of writing can be great. If you're writing down a story, your feelings or a to-do list - you'll feel better. And don't type things up. Put pen to paper. Focus on how neat your handwriting is (or can be!), pick a fun color pen or use a green piece of paper; anything that is visually pleasing. Also, making lists is known to help calm the mind and release dopamine (a happy chemical) when you get to check something off.

Clean.

I know this doesn't sound relaxing or fun, BUT the act of cleaning gives you a feeling of satisfaction and allows you to be productive. Cleaning and de-cluttering your space will bring you some clarity and tranquility. Try it out. Make your bed and fold the laundry that's been on your floor for 8 days - see if you feel any better. But when you do, don't think of it as a chore. Be mindful, take the time to realize the change you're imparting on your surroundings.

Showers & face masks.

Give yourself a break and make sure you're taking care of yourself! Take a nice hot shower or bath, calm the nerves, slowly massage the shampoo into your skull. Afterwards, wrap yourself in a big fluffy towel, slap on a face mask and pour yourself a glass of wine. If you have the time, plop yourself on the couch and watch some TV or read a book. Check out of your life and zone into someone else's.

Meditation.

Meditation can help calm the mind and bring perspective. When meditating, remind yourself that whatever you're experiencing is only temporary. No matter what, you'll get through this. The Universe is on your side, you just have to have faith and take care of yourself.

Try some of these out, let me know your thoughts! These are some great methods to deal with the fickle parts of life.
